1. Cairo may still be the biggest city in Africa, but in 1996 OR Tambo International airport took the title ‘busiest airport in Africa’ away from Cairo International Airport.

2. OR Tambo International flies non-stop to 6 continents, a bragging right that few airports around the world can claim.

3. Concord used OR Tambo’s runways for testing purposes back in the 1970’s. The reason OR Tambo was chosen was due to its high altitude (1694 meters above sea level) and engineers wanted to measure the Concord’s performance under such conditions.

4. In January of 2016 approximately 230 frogs were seized at OR Tambo. Apparently destined for Taiwan the shipment consisted of rain frogs as well as bullfrogs.

5. The airport employs somewhere around 18 thousand people to handle various roles and maintain its infrastructure.

6. OR Tambo can facilitate approximately 28 million passengers in a year.

7. This airport has gone through three name changes since it was built in 1952. It was founded as Jan Smuts Airport but was changed to Johannesburg International Airport in 1994. Two years later, in 1996, the name was changed again, this time to OR Tambo International.

8. If you ever find yourself at OR Tambo International with some time kill, you should take the opportunity to visit the remarkable Aircraft Viewing Deck. From this location you can look out over the main runway to view many different types of aircraft such as the Airbus A380 or one of Boeing’s Dreamliners.

9. 2012 saw the prestigious Intercontinental Hotel at OR Tambo named as the winner of the World Luxury Airport award.
